I am sure the thousands of two / three tier sub-sub-contractors / supply chain will disagree, the only risk allocation that they are aware of is simply called ‘subbie bashing’, as it is they that ultimately pay the price.

An excellent article, highlighting issues surrounding contruction apprenticeships.

There is a problem with the agency pros and cons section.
1 ATAs (Apprenticeship Training Agencies) are now defunct and were replaced by FJAAs (FlexiJob Apprentice Agencies)
2. FJAAs are not a Local Labour Agency and construction companies do not have the type of issues mentioned with a FJAA as they might have with a Local Labour Agency. It is very misleading to conflate the two.

Surprised more hasn’t been made of this as it seems and obvious contributor to their respective downfalls. Perhaps 50% or so of an inflated EOT value on day one is banked and deemed sufficient value for their plans and anything else received is a bonus…

I agree that designers do not need a CSCS card. They are after all, visitors to the site and therefore must be escorted while walking around the site. They must not be allowed to walk straight on to site as they may not be aware of the hazards which are present due to them not being there all the time in an every evolving environment. The Visitors card was a good idea ( even if it was a just a way of making money) to facilitate logging in for online induction systems, but the carrier of the card still had to be escorted.

Does this apply to ECS cards as well? the ECS system does have designer roles for cards such as Telecom designer? Would these be required or could they be listed as a requirement for proving your knolwedge of H&S?

It appears that you need to be able to provide “adequate evidence of health and safety knowledge” , how do you do this without a CSCS card? Should CSCS not bring back the visitors card which it withdrew?

Worth double-checking the data – Amey’s pay gap is 25.8%, not 0.9% (your data is from Amey LG, not Amey Services) and Costain’s bonus gap is 56.3%, not 100% (your data is from Costain Ltd, not Costain Group). There are probably other errors here too – T&T with a minus 100% bonus pay gap? Somehow I don’t think so!

When I read this I thought, is it April the first?
However, if the industry agrees with “taking advantage of smaller contractors ‘just not right’ ” why do they not unilaterally agree to support the smaller contractors cashflow by adopting 30 day payment terms without retentions, as opposed to the current and completely unfair 60/90/120 day payment terms that are currently being imposed – an article not so long ago reminded us that it is the smaller contractors that support and finance our construction industry, and the sooner that this is recognised, and corrected, the better.

In reply to streetwisesubbie. I wouldn't necessarily disagree, however he should be commended for his current stance. The more of this rhetoric we hear from people in this position, perhaps the more people will listen and hopefully be influenced.
