The winners of the Construction News Awards 2024 have been announced at a dazzling ceremony in central London.

On Thursday evening (11 July), comedian Russell Kane conducted proceedings in the glitzy ballroom of the JW Marriott Grosvenor House hotel in Mayfair – where more than 1,200 clients, contractors and suppliers celebrated outstanding work across the construction sector.

Large and small teams and projects from across the UK were recognised, as 24 awards were handed out across an array of categories. The ceremony marked the culmination of work from 107 judges, including big-name directors from across the industry, who whittled down a total of 573 entries.

Mace won Contractor of the Year (turnover over £500m) for the fifth year in succession, with judges praising the firm’s “strong portfolio of work underpinned by a commitment to minimise environmental impact”.

Hochtief-Murphy Joint Venture (JV) was named Contractor of the Year (turnover under £500m). Judges described its work on the National Grid’s London Power Tunnels Phase 2 as “a rare example of a contractor really delivering on a truly collaborative operating model”.

Hochtief-Murphy JV won two other trophies: Health, Safety and Wellbeing Excellence (Project) and Health, Safety and Wellbeing Excellence (Company) for its ‘One Team, One Spirit’ programme.

Three other entrants picked up two trophies apiece. Align JV won Supply Chain Excellence and MMC Project of the Year, and Tilbury Douglas achieved a double win with Project of the Year (under £20m) and Project of the Year (£20m-£50m).

Willmott Dixon’s chief sustainability officer Julia Barrett won the Construction Leader of the Year award. She was recognised for her “commitment to driving change through collaboration, strategy and leadership”, said the judges.

In addition, Willmott Dixon received the Low Carbon Project of the Year trophy for its work on the North Shields Transport Hub in Tyneside.

The Specialist Contractor of the Year award went to Statom, with judges praising the firm for its “passionate commitment, clever integration of the supply chain, and first-class training”.
